Stars and Ice Crystals

One thing that is always important in my life is my volunteer work. 2020 has changed a lot. Before I used to visit children and senior homes as a volunteer for Hands On Tokyo, but with the start of the pandemic they, reasonably, closed their doors. Luckily HOT found another way to bring some joy and color to these homes and started an online crafting project. I joined pretty early on.
In this project volunteers come together to an online meeting in witch we discuss a topic for the following month and share ideas for crafts around this topic. During or after the meeting each volunteer decides what they want to make at home and later sent to the Hands On Tokyo office. At the office the Hands On Tokyo staff divides up the crafts and sends them on the children and senior homes.

For December I decided to make paper-cut stars and ice crystals. It is a very simple project that I loved to make as a child back in Austria.
All you need is:

  • a square piece of paper in any color you would like to use

  • a pair of scissors

For the stars:

Place the paper in front of you.

Fold it into a triangular shape.

Fold it again,

and again. The fully closed edge is now the lower right side.

Cut a triangular piece out of the upper right side.

Now you can get creative, cutting out pieces of the other two sides. But be careful, make sure you do not cut away the whole edge of any of them!
When done, unfold, and your star is ready to shine.

For the ice crystals, the first four steps are the same:

Now, instead of just cutting out a triangular piece of the upper right side, cut out a bigger piece, creating a crystalline shape.

Next you can cut a few small pieces out on the other sides, but be careful, again, not to take away the whole edge.

When done, unfold your ice crystal.
