Spontaneously sewing a Pocket Square

As of now I was not in the habit of using pocket squares and therefore I don’t own any. My husband has a few, but since women’s cloth have a tendency for very small pockets, when I found myself wanting to try adding a pocket square to my outfit, I also found that I could not just borrow one of his. I also didn’t want to buy one, not knowing if I would like it, so spontaneously I decided to just make one myself. I only used materials I already had at home, and I want to note right away that this is not a traditional way of making pocket squares. This is just how I did it.

With tailors chalk I drew a 24x24cm square on my fabric,

then cut it out with fabric sheers.

I could just have turned and felled down the edges of the square, but I wanted to make it look a little more special. Therefore I decided to use bias tape to finish the edges of my pocket square.

Alining the edges of the square and the bias tape (right sides facing each other), I ran a running strich along the crease of the tape.

With the iron I folded and pressed the tape over the edge.

On the wrong side of the fabric I used a felling stitch to sew the bias tape on.

This is how it looked on the right side now.

The process was repeated on the second edge,

the third, and the forth.

All done, and ready to wear.

(Note: I forgot to take picture before wearing it.)

Having this one I’ve found that I do enjoy wearing a pocket square with my jackets every now and again, therefore in the future I will probably buy a square or two. Still, having this hand sewn one that I made for myself over the course of a weekend is something special and I will keep on using it for sure!
